OUR FOUNDER
Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche
Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche (1931–2022) was a world-renowned Buddhist meditation master, scholar and teacher, and the Founder of the New Kadampa Tradition – International Kadampa Buddhist Union (NKT-IKBU).
Having devoted his life to studying, practising and teaching Buddha’s teachings, Venerable Geshe-la dedicated more than forty years to making the wisdom of Kadampa Buddhism accessible to people throughout the modern world.
Through his extraordinary kindness, he established a worldwide network of meditation centres, wrote twenty-three authoritative books on Buddhism and trained many qualified teachers, creating the conditions for people everywhere to discover lasting inner peace and happiness.
His teachings emphasise how we can integrate Buddha’s wisdom into our daily lives, transforming everyday difficulties into opportunities for spiritual growth.
Our Buddhist Tradition
Timeless wisdom for modern life
Kadampa Buddhism is a special tradition of Mahayana Buddhism founded by the great Indian Buddhist Master Atisha and developed in Tibet by the great Buddhist Master Je Tsongkhapa.
Its teachings originate from Buddha Shakyamuni and have been passed down through an unbroken lineage of realised teachers.
The word Kadampa refers to practitioners who integrate Buddha’s teachings into their daily lives. Through studying, meditating and putting these teachings into practice, we can gradually develop a peaceful mind, a kind heart and the wisdom to help others.
Today, modern Kadampa Buddhism makes these timeless teachings accessible to people everywhere, whatever their background or way of life.
Our Senior Teachers
Continuing a living tradition
The New Kadampa Tradition – International Kadampa Buddhist Union is guided by highly qualified senior teachers who have studied and practised Kadampa Buddhism for many years.
Through their teachings, example and dedication, they continue the work of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche, helping people throughout the world discover the benefits of Buddha’s wisdom and meditation.
